How to Care for Alpaca Knitwear, Scarves and Throws

Alpaca is a beautiful natural fibre known for its softness, warmth and luxurious feel. With the right care, your alpaca knitwear, scarves and throws can remain beautiful for many years.

The good news is that alpaca does not need to be washed as often as many other fibres. In many cases, airing your alpaca piece between wears is enough to keep it fresh.

Here are our simple tips for caring for your alpaca garments and homewares.

Air Before Washing

Alpaca is naturally breathable and often only needs airing between wears. After wearing an alpaca scarf, jumper, cape or wrap, lay it flat or hang it gently in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

This helps refresh the fibres without unnecessary washing.

For throws and blankets, airing over a clothes rack or clean surface can help keep them feeling fresh and beautiful.

Hand Wash Gently

When your alpaca piece does need washing, and if the care instructions on the garment suggest hand washing, then a gentle hand washing is usually best. Use cool or lukewarm water and a mild wool wash or gentle detergent suitable for delicate fibres.

Avoid hot water, as it can cause natural fibres to shrink or felt.

Place the garment in the water and gently move it around. Do not rub, scrub or wring, as this can damage the fibres and change the shape of the garment.

Rinse Carefully

After washing, rinse gently in clean cool water until the detergent is removed. Again, avoid twisting or wringing the garment.

For delicate alpaca knitwear, scarves and shawls, support the item with both hands when lifting it from the water. Wet natural fibres can stretch if they are pulled or handled roughly.

Remove Excess Water

To remove excess water, gently press the item between your hands or roll it in a clean towel. The towel will absorb moisture without damaging the fibres.

Never wring alpaca, as this can stretch the garment or affect its shape.

Dry Flat

Alpaca garments should be dried flat on a clean towel, away from direct heat and sunlight. Gently reshape the item while damp, smoothing it back into its natural form.

Avoid hanging wet alpaca garments, as the weight of the water can cause stretching.

For scarves and shawls, lay them flat and allow them to dry naturally.

Avoid the Tumble Dryer

Do not tumble dry alpaca. Heat and agitation can damage the fibre, cause shrinkage or change the texture of the garment.

Natural drying is the safest option and helps preserve the softness and shape of your alpaca piece.

Store Alpaca Properly

When storing alpaca knitwear, fold rather than hang. Hanging can cause heavier garments to stretch over time.

Store clean alpaca pieces in a cool, dry place. For seasonal storage, place them in a breathable cotton bag or storage box. Make sure garments are completely dry before packing them away.

Protect Against Moths

Like many natural fibres, alpaca should be protected from moths. Always store alpaca garments clean, as moths are attracted to natural oils, food stains and perspiration. It is best to store your garment in a regularly used area, as moths prefer dark, undisturbed spaces.

Cedar blocks, lavender sachets or other natural moth deterrents can be helpful. Check stored pieces occasionally, especially during warmer months.

Caring for Alpaca Throws

Alpaca throws and blankets are often best aired regularly and spot cleaned when needed. For larger pieces, professional dry cleaning may be the safest option, especially if the care label recommends it.
