How to Wash an Alpaca Poncho: A Gentle Care Guide
Wondering how to wash an alpaca poncho? The best approach depends on the poncho’s fibre blend, knit and any details such as fringe or embellishment. Always check the garment care label first, as some styles can be gently hand washed while others need professional cleaning.
Whether you’re caring for a women’s poncho or a men’s poncho, the same rule applies: follow the instructions for that particular garment. We don’t currently stock men’s ponchos, but this guide can help you care for an alpaca poncho you already own.
Before you wash an alpaca poncho
Check the care label before getting the poncho wet. A garment made from 100% alpaca may have different care requirements from an alpaca blend, and the knit, shape or finishing details can also affect how it should be cleaned.
If the label says dry clean only, take the poncho to a professional cleaner. If it permits hand washing, use the gentle method below. Avoid washing the garment more often than needed; airing it out between wears may be enough.

How to wash an alpaca poncho by hand
- Prepare the water. Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water and add a small amount of gentle wool wash suitable for delicate fibres.
- Wash gently. Place the poncho in the water and press it down softly so it becomes wet. Move it gently through the water without rubbing, scrubbing or agitating the knit.
- Rinse carefully. Drain the basin and rinse with cool water until the detergent is removed. Support the poncho as you lift it, as wet knitwear can become heavy.
- Remove excess water. Do not wring or twist the poncho. Lay it on a clean towel, roll the towel up and press gently to absorb excess water.
How to dry an alpaca poncho
Lay the poncho flat on a fresh, dry towel or a suitable flat drying surface. Gently reshape it, paying attention to the neckline and hem, then leave it to dry away from direct sunlight, heaters and other direct heat. Avoid hanging it while wet, as the weight of the water may pull it out of shape.

Can you machine wash an alpaca wool poncho?
We recommend hand washing alpaca knitwear only when the garment label allows it, and not machine washing it. Machine agitation can damage delicate fibres or affect the poncho’s shape. I am sure we have all put something in the washing machine thinking it will be fine on a wool cycle, only for it to come out half the size. It's a horrible surprise, especially if it is our favorite alpaca garment. So my suggestion is don't risk it. If the label gives different instructions, follow those instructions or ask a cleaner experienced with alpaca garments.
Does a female poncho need different care from a men’s poncho?
No. The care method depends on the poncho’s fibre content, construction and care label rather than whether it is described as a women’s poncho or men’s poncho. Check the label on the individual garment before washing.
