Alpaca has less elasticity than wool and creates a softer fabric with more drape, so the finished piece may hang differently and ribbed areas may not spring back as firmly. Patterns for scarves, shawls, wraps and relaxed garments generally suit alpaca particularly well. For fitted garments, you may prefer an alpaca blend containing wool for added structure and elasticity.

Yarn weights describe the general thickness of a yarn. As a guide, 4 Ply is comparable to fingering weight, while 8 Ply is comparable to DK weight.

However, not all yarns within the same weight category are exactly the same thickness. The fibre, construction and manufacturer can all affect how a yarn works up. One 8 Ply yarn may therefore produce a slightly different fabric or tension from another. Follow the care instructions shown in the Product Information section and on the yarn label. In most cases, alpaca yarn should be gently hand-washed in cool or tepid water using a mild wool detergent. Do not wring, twist or tumble dry. Reshape and dry flat in the shade.
