Yes, alpaca yarn can often be used with a pattern written for wool, provided you can achieve the pattern’s recommended tension. Compare the yarn weight, needle or hook size and total meterage, then make and wash a tension square before beginning.

Alpaca has less elasticity than wool and creates a softer fabric with more drape, so the finished piece may hang differently and ribbed areas may not spring back as firmly. Patterns for scarves, shawls, wraps and relaxed garments generally suit alpaca particularly well. For fitted garments, you may prefer an alpaca blend containing wool for added structure and elasticity.

Yarn weights describe the general thickness of a yarn. As a guide, 4 Ply is comparable to fingering weight, while 8 Ply is comparable to DK weight.

However, not all yarns within the same weight category are exactly the same thickness. The fibre, construction and manufacturer can all affect how a yarn works up. One 8 Ply yarn may therefore produce a slightly different fabric or tension from another. Always check the recommended needle or hook size, tension and pattern requirements, and make a tension square before beginning your project.

Follow the care instructions shown in the Product Information section and on the yarn label. In most cases, alpaca yarn should be gently hand-washed in cool or tepid water using a mild wool detergent. Do not wring, twist or tumble dry. Reshape and dry flat in the shade.
